BALZAN PRIZE 2004 FOR HUMANITY,
PEACE AND FRATERNITY AMONG PEOPLES
AWARDED TO
THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO

The announcement of the appointment of the prize was given during the International Meeting People and Religions
Religions and Cultures:
the Courage to Forge a New Spiritual Humanism.

REASONS:

For the commitment of the Community of Sant'Egidio to re-launch in the world pacific co-existence among different ethnic groups and to promote, no matter the religious belief a humanitarian action of peace and fraternity among peoples, and especially for the implementation of the DREAM programme, the "dream" of tackling AIDS and malnutrition that is now taking place in Mozambique, a real model for other African countries in troubles.

BALZAN PRIZE FOR PEACE :
THE PRIZE OF POPE JOHN AND MOTHER THERESA

The Prize for humanity, peace and fraternity among peoples is a special Prize awarded by Balzan Foundation to a single person or a body that stands out for high humanitarian merits.

So far Pope John XXIII, Mother Theresa, Abbé Pierre, Nobel Foundation, UN (High commission for refugees), International committee of the Red Cross and the Pakistani Abdul Sattar Edhi have been awarded.
Balzan Prizes are awarded for different topics, within exact and human sciences. They are among the most important humanistic and scientific recognitions of the world, both for the scientific rigour and for the value of the awarded prize (the Prize for peace awards two million of Swiss francs, about 1.3 million Euros). They are aimed at fostering in the world culture, sciences and most deserving humanitarian initiatives for peace and fraternity among peoples, no matter national, race and religious differences. Right for the last aim a special Prize is to be awarded no more often then after a three-year term.
The Foundation was established in Lugano (Swiss) in 1956 thanks to the generosity of Angela Lina Balzan who, after her father Eugenio Balzan's death, inherited a conspicuous property that she wanted to be intended to honour his memory.
Eugenio Balzan was born in 1874 he was a journalist for many years and afterwards administrator and co-owner, for a small share, of the "Corriere della Sera". He left Italy in 1933 due to his opposition to fascist environments opposing the independence of "Corriere". Attentive and skilled administrator of his property, he had invested his yields in Swiss where he died in 1953.
The International Balzan Foundation "Fund", with its headquarters in Zurich, administrates this property today. The International Balzan Foundation "Prize", with its headquarters in Milan, deals with the choice of the Awarded and the award of Prizes, and elaborates and leads the policy of the Foundation.
