EDITORIAL

Dear friends of the Community of Sant’Egidio, you moved your first steps here in Rome, in the troublesome years after 1968. As children of this Church, presiding in charity, you have spread your charisma to many parts of the world. The Word of God, love for the Church, predilection for the poor, communication of the Gospel, were the stars that guided you, under different skies, to witness the one message of Christ. I thank you for your apostolic work; I thank you for your care for the least and your search for peace, which all characterise your Community.
Pope Benedict XVI addressed these affectionate and fatherly words to some thousands people of the Community who were crowding the square of the Tiberina Island in Rome, in front of the basilica of St. Bartolomeo, memorial place of martyrs of our time, at the end of a solemn and moving prayer.
It has been a day of prayer, of unity, of great joy. The pope, has he himself said, has made "a pilgrimage in memory of the martyrs of the 20th century" but also a meeting with the Community that celebrates this year 40 years of life. Children, elderly people, families, have warmly welcomed with gratitude the Holy Father, who had words and gestures of love for all and said: "turning your eyes to these heroes of faith, strive to imitate their courage and perseverance in serving the Gospel, especially among the poor. Be builders of peace and reconciliation among enemies and people who oppose each other. Nourish your faith by meditating and listening to the Word of God, through daily prayer, by actively taking part in the Holy Mass. Authentic friendship with Christ will be the source of your mutual love. Supported by his Spirit, you will contribute to building a more brotherly world."
