William R. Jones

Aged 37

Sentenced to death in Missouri (USA)

Executed -  Nov. 20th 2002

His story

William Robert Jones comes from a difficult family. His parents were drugs and alcoholic users, so he was often  brutally beaten by them. One day he was involved in a teen-agers brawl. As a result, he reported a cranium trauma and, following to that, a serious brain damage.  William was jailed in 1986 when he was just 21 charged of  a murder he committed to protect himself from a man’s  assault.

He could not afford good lawyers, so he had to be defended by attorneys appointed by the Court who revealed themselves highly inexperienced and unable to enhance his extenuating proofs.  So far all his appeals have been vain, so his execution has been planned for next November 20th. A final chance is placed in the Governor of Missouri, if he grants a pardon to him.

The appeal to save William

The Community of Sant’Egidio invites everybody  to share its appeal aiming to spare William’s life from a death sentence. It is possible to send the petition by fax or e-mail to the Governor of Missouri as well as to the Clemency Board.

You can use the following text in English.

URGENT APPEAL PRESENTED BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT’EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF WILLIAM ROBERT JONES, SENTENCED TO DEATH.

Your Excellencies,

We are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death Mr. William Robert Jones, suffering a serious brain damage and not fairly assisted by his attorneys appointed by the Court in the past.

We urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against him.

We implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.

Respectfully Yours
