Reading of the Word of God

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

This is the Gospel of the poor,
liberation for the imprisoned,
sight for the blind,
freedom for the oppressed.

1 Corinthians 1,17-25

After all, Christ sent me not to baptise, but to preach the gospel; and not by means of wisdom of language, wise words which would make the cross of Christ pointless. The message of the cross is folly for those who are on the way to ruin, but for those of us who are on the road to salvation it is the power of God. As scripture says: I am going to destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of any who understand. Where are the philosophers? Where are the experts? And where are the debaters of this age? Do you not see how God has shown up human wisdom as folly? Since in the wisdom of God the world was unable to recognise God through wisdom, it was God's own pleasure to save believers through the folly of the gospel. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentiles foolishness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the power of God and the wisdom of God. God's folly is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

Paul has identified the roots of the division seen in the community: the presumption of the ego and the pride people take in their wisdom. Consequently, in order to exalt the centrality of preaching the Gospel of the cross, he went so far as to thank God that he had not baptized anyone. His reminder of the centrality of preaching is perhaps an invitation to the Christians of the beginning of this new millennium to rediscover the primacy of communicating the Gospel and so to ask themselves how, as individuals and as a community, they live the urgency of the mission of evangelization. It is clear that one of the primary ways to make this possible is to rediscover the primacy of the Word of God in our personal lives and our pastoral commitment. Salvation, as Paul underlines on several occasions, does not come from our wisdom, as the Greeks thought, nor from our traditions, as the Jews believed, but from welcoming the foolishness of the limitless love of Jesus’ cross. The mystery of the cross, understood as the ultimate manifestation of love for others, remains at the heart of the Gospel and of its communication. Paul reminds the members of the community that among them there are not many who are wise according to the flesh, nor many powerful people, nor many nobles, but instead he urges them to consider the incredible dignity of their "call." The Lord chose them precisely because of their weakness, so that they might achieve great things in the Lord’s name and not their own. This is why the disciples of Jesus should only boast about the Gospel and not about their own wisdom or human strength. The foolishness of the cross is what saves, the Gospel of a love that knows no limits. This is the wisdom that saves the world.
