The foyer

In Rome since 1990, six severely mentally impaired people have been living together in a lovely apartment near the Basilica of St. Peter’s. The foyer is self supporting and is not subsidised by either public or private enterprises.

The foyer was created to meet the needs for a permanent home for those mentally disabled who were alone, either because their parents were dead or because no one else was able to look after them.

It is an alternative to an institution. The residents pool their resources (Pensions, benefits, etc…) and, according to their capacity, run the foyer helped by friends of the Community who are all voluntary.
