Machava - Mozambique
The Long Distance Adoption of the children treated at the DREAM Centre
…and their mothers

In august the long distance adoption program started for the children with
AIDS treated at the DREAM Centre of the Community of Sant'Egidio
located at Machava, in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

Thursday is the check-up day for the children treated at the Machava DREAM centre.
It is a very busy day, but also a very happy one.
With the treatment the children recover quickly and their mothers are given back the joy of seeing their children grow.

There are many children on treatment at Machava.
Long distance adoptions provide them with
medical treatment,
nutritional supplements,
home care assistance and support.

It is not enough to give the mothers the drugs for their children's treatment, the children need to be looked after also at home and they require a regular nutritional supplement.

Furthermore, long distance adoptions will enable to assure legal registration for all the children. In fact, many African children are not registered at birth due to the high costs of the procedure. No registration means no existence and no rights: that is why legal registration is guaranteed to every child who enters the long distance adoption program.
All expenses for school tuition fees and any further school expenses (for school material, books, uniforms) are covered by the adoption program, just like any other necessity the child may have, like clothes, for instance.
The people who initiated and are in charge of the long distance adoption program belong to the association
"Mulheres para o DREAM", activist women fighting against AIDS.
Every Thursday at the Machava Centre they meet mothers who have come for their children's medical check-up. They speak to them, listen to their problems or questions, see the children and ask about their medical situation.
The activists also visit the adopted children at home. And as soon as the door opens, a party-time begins!

Many parents of the children under treatment also ask to "be adopted" for their medical treatment, a treatment accessible now to everyone in rich countries, and which is too often denied in Africa. DREAM really is a dream: it gives new life to grown-ups and children.
