Haiti: The Community of Sant’Egidio, which has already been present on the island for some time, is launching an aid program for the victims of the earthquake. DONATE ONLINE

The Community of Sant’Egidio has launched an emergency aid program for the victims of the terrible earthquake that has struck Haiti, where the Community has already been present for several years.  A delegation is travelling to Port-au-Prince to assess the most urgent needs and to bring aid to the affected population.

The Haitian Communities of Sant’Egidio are located in three areas: the capital of Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haitien, and Anse-à-Veau.  They are made up of around one hundred young people who work closely with the poor people of their cities.  In particular, the young people of the Community of Port-au-Prince visit the beggars who live around the cathedral and have begun two Schools of Peace with the children of the “Delmas” and “Croix-de-Boquet” neighborhoods.  Just a few days ago they celebrated Christmas with about 150 of these children.

In 2003 the Community of Sant’Egidio also began a long-distance adoption program in Port-au-Prince, in the Lakay Mwen Mission.  The program reaches about one hundred children and several dozen elderly people with support for their daily needs: especially food, medical care, and education. More Information.
