Eight days have passed after Christmas and the liturgy presents to us the beginning of the Gospel of John as to let us continue the celebration of the mystery of Christmas. We should not have only the memory of an important event that belongs to the past. A mystic of the seventeenth century said: "If Christ was born a thousand times in Bethlehem, but not in your heart, you would be lost forever." Christmas is a mystery that must be experienced by believers. In fact, the birth of Jesus interrogates us again and must indeed continue to question us. It is sufficient to look at ourselves and at the world around us to realize that there is a widespread need for a rebirth. It is not possible to continue without a change, without a deep interior renewal. However, when we still believe that it is impossible to change things, it is as if we are taken by a freezing resignation, and it is even more difficult to change the hearts of men and women. The Gospel of Christmas tells us again that it is possible to revive.
The liturgy invites us to be open by listening to the first page of the Gospel of John at beginning of this new solar year. "In the beginning was the Word." "In the beginning," means "the foundation," the origin, the source of life. The Church invites us to put the evangelical word at the beginning of this year. To share the Gospel means to be born again. If there is no Gospel at the foundation of our days, our efforts will be vain because we will be deprived of the light that came into the world. We must grow with the Gospel, day after day, reading through it, page after page, in order to listen to the Word of God and put it into practice. Through this diligence, we become contemporaries of the Gospel. The Sundays will help us in this journey together with the Lord. We will follow him in the Epiphany, in his baptism, in his growth in Nazareth, in his mission to the towns and villages of his homeland, in his passion, and in his death and resurrection. From Christmas onwards, the Word, the Gospel word, must become flesh in our lives, -a word that becomes true in our day. Through this word, in fact, God fulfils his work - his history of salvation in us and in the world. Salvation is not an inexpressible idea. In fact, God appears to us with the intelligibility of his word and he asks us to make it visible in our lives, our works, and our behaviour. The Word of God is not abstract. It must manifest itself in the reality of our lives. We could say that the evangelical word demands to be seen, it must become flesh, real life, visible, and able to be experienced. It was not by chance that the shepherds exclaimed: "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us" (Lk 2:15).
That word, which existed from the beginning of time, became flesh as a child that night. The word "flesh," in addition to indicating visibility and concreteness, denotes the fragility of a man, and shows his weakness. This is the law of Incarnation that becomes the way of the rebirth of all of us. How could we become children of God? The evangelist writes: "But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God." We become children of God by accepting the Gospel. We grow by manifesting, in the poverty and in the modesty of our existence, that the Gospel pages become the flesh of our living

Prayer is the heart of the life of the Community of Sant'Egidio and is its absolute priority. At the end of the day, every the Community of Sant'Egidio, large or small, gathers around the Lord to listen to his Word. The Word of God and the prayer are, in fact, the very basis of the whole life of the Community. The disciples cannot do other than remain at the feet of Jesus, as did Mary of Bethany, to receive his love and learn his ways (Phil. 2:5).
So every evening, when the Community returns to the feet of the Lord, it repeats the words of the anonymous disciple: " Lord, teach us how to pray". Jesus, Master of prayer, continues to answer: "When you pray, say: Abba, Father". It is not a simple exhortation, it is much more. With these words Jesus lets the disciples participate in his own relationship with the Father. Therefore in prayer, the fact of being children of the Father who is in heaven, comes before the words we may say. So praying is above all a way of being! That is to say we are children who turn with faith to the Father, certain that they will be heard.
Jesus teaches us to call God "Our Father". And not simply "Father" or "My Father". Disciples, even when they pray on their own, are never isolated nor they are orphans; they are always members of the Lord's family.
In praying together, beside the mystery of being children of God, there is also the mystery of brotherhood, as the Father of the Church said: "You cannot have God as father without having the church as mother". When praying together, the Holy Spirit assembles the disciples in the upper room together with Mary, the Lord's mother, so that they may direct their gaze towards the Lord's face and learn from Him the secret of his Heart.
 The Communities of Sant'Egidio all over the world gather in the various places of prayer and lay before the Lord the hopes and the sufferings of the tired, exhausted crowds of which the Gospel speaks ( Mat. 9: 3-7 ), In these ancient crowds we can see the huge masses of the modern cities, the millions of refugees who continue to flee their countries, the poor, relegated to the very fringe of life and all those who are waiting for someone to take care of them. Praying together includes the cry, the invocation, the aspiration, the desire for peace, the healing and salvation of the men and women of this world. Prayer is never in vain; it rises ceaselessly to the Lord so that anguish is turned into hope, tears into joy, despair into happiness, and solitude into communion. May the Kingdom of God come soon among people!
