Fruits of peace in the city of Rome, one year after the murder of Maricica, a young Romanian nurse, hundreds of people stop by and remember her in prayer, to say no to violence

Sant'Egidio, Prayer

Rome, Thursday 13th October 2011, 5 p.m.: as usual, the square of Anagnina Metro Station is crowded with hundreds of people.

The news is that yesterday afternoon, the crowd gathered in prayer to remember a young Romanian nurse, Maricica Hahaianu, who was killed in that very place a year ago, the victim of an unwarranted act of violence.

At the invitation of the Community of Sant'Egidio, hundreds of people returned to the place, one year later, to stop, remember and say no to the violence that too often, especially in recent months, seems to hold the city in its grasp.

Bishop Andrea Marciante was present, together with some local parish priests, including Fr Matteo Zuppi and Fr Gino Biolchini. There was the youth band "Sounds for Peace", with its music that talks of peace to a generation which is often fascinated by violent models and behaviours.

Also several relatives of Marica came, and many Romans with them, both Italians and immigrants, with the same wish and the same prayer: that Maricica's sad story will not happen again. The many people who came represent a seed of peace that can rescue the city from a violent drift.

In a corner of the square, the Bishop noted, "The olive tree that we planted last year has grown and it is ready to bear fruits of peace".
