Sant'Egidio is at the forefront in welcoming and offering the essential aid to those wholand on our shores and who, in recent days, have seen how also the solidarity of Italians has increased significantly in these situations. But this needs some major action.
The so-called "immigrants emergency" is a false perception of reality, as stressed in recent days by the president of Sant'Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo. Although there was much talk these days about the migrants (better say refugees) at the border of Ventimiglia or at the stations of Rome and Milan, this is actually a question of reduced numbers, not so difficult to manage.
Moreover, even the most recent data shows that there is not an immigration emergency: in 2013 the 28 EU countries registered, compared to the two previous years (2011-2012), a decrease of 300,000 entry applications for business purposes and a simultaneous increase of about 300,000 asylum applications. The balance is then equal.
