Sant'Egidio and Albania: an history of friendship at the heart of the Meeting of Peace #peaceispossible

printable version

Twenty-nine years after the first meeting between religions in Assisi, this is the place where the international inter-religious dialogue of the Prayer for Peace will take place. It is introduced with a simple but key title: "Peace is Always Possible". There has been a bit of wonder when Tirana has been chosen as the host city. The suitability of Tirana is highlighted by its troubled past. As Marco Impagliazzo declared, Albania has been the protagonist of a dramatic landscape, which has been characterised by a major migration flow of Albanian citizens who flee their land that was at the time in disastrous, tragic conditions.

Distant memories are today remembered, especially in the light of recent events. Furthermore, Tirana is a city where the environment of living together is present and welcomed. Indeed, various religious and ethnic groups coexist peacefully in the land. It may seem surreal, if not a utopia, the fact that Christians (Catholic, Orthodox and Protestants) and Muslims live together day by day as friends and in peace. These are the grounds on which the international meeting of prayer for peace is built on and on which the Community of Sant'Egidio works, day by day, to build a more human world.
