 “From Moratorium to the Abolition of Capital Punishment”
 
 
On December 18, 2007, the UN General Assembly approved the Universal Moratorium on the Death Penalty by a landslide majority of 104 to 54.
A great movement of synergy with Italy taking a lead role, a worldwide front and a direct and telling contribution from the Community of Sant’Egidio, too.
For the first time ever, the abolition of capital punishment joins the official benchmarks to be aspired to by the international community.
On the day in which a decision by the US Supreme Court is awaited on the Troy Davis trial in Georgia, the Community of Sant'Egidio, in the name of the millions of people and opinion leaders who signed the appeal for a Universal Moratorium, renews an invitation.  It is an invitation to halt an execution which is felt by a large part of world public opinion to seriously harm the right a fair trial in Georgia and which would risk straining that country’s legal system. From 16 countries around the world, Justice Ministers, parliamentarians, leaders of Supreme Courts of Justice, will be congregating in Rome.
Coming both from countries that have retained the death penalty, as well as from some that have abolished it, they will discuss the pathway leading:”From Moratorium to Abolition of Capital Punishment”.
Following the Second International Congress of Rome, 2007, Gabon abolished its capital punishment, and it was that country which presented the text of the Resolution to the Third Commission in its historic session of 18 December 2007.
 
The Congress will be presided by Mario Marazziti, alongside the Vice President of Italy’s Constitutional Court, Giovanni Maria Flick.
 
Updated press releases on capital punishment around the world will be available as well as on the implementation of the UN Resolution.
 
Representatives will be present from:
The European Union, Italy, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Gabon, Kenya, Benin, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Guinea Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Mexico, the Philippines, Kazakhstan.
