The Basilica of San Bartolomeo on the Tiberina island now hosts the cross of Sr. Leonella Sgorbati, killed on 17 September 2006 in Mogadiscio. It has been entrusted to this place, Memorial of the witnesses to faith, by the Missionary Sisters of the Consolata, the congregation of Sr. Leonella along more than forty years of mission in Africa.
The delivery happened during the sunday Eucharistic Liturgy of the Community of Sant'Egidio, centered on the memory of the life and of the withess of Sr. Leonella. The Superior Generals of the two branches of the Consolata Family took part in the celebration, together with many members of the two congregations, gathered in these days in Rome for an international meeting on mission.
We offer hereafter the texts (in italian) of the homily of Fr. Angelo Romano and of the greeting of Sr. Gabriella Bono, Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of the Consolata, together with some photos of the celebration.
Homily by Fr. Angelo Romano - Rector of the Basilica of St. Bartolomeo all’Isola Tiberina
Greeting by Sr. Gabriella Bono - Superior General of the Suore Missionarie della Consolata
On 17 September 2006, 12.30 pm, Sr. Leonella Sgorbati, 66, missionary sister of the Consolata, had just ended her lesson at the Nursing school she had established at the Mogadiscio Hospital.
Out of the school she was shot by a gang and fell on the ground. Together with her, also Mohamed Mahamud, her bodyguard, muslim, dad of four children, was murdered.
The sisters ran and tried to save both of them. Immediately brought to the surgery room, it was impossible to do anything.
Sr. Leonella's last words, in a whisper, were: “perdono, perdono, perdono” (forgive, forgive, forgive).
