Peacemakers in a conflict situation

As the tension grows in eastern Congo, Sant'Egidio promotes a campaign against violence

Bukavu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent months is particularly threatened by resurgent ethnic and regional conflicts.

The climate of instability in recent times has seen growing violence in the towns and villages, where the spread of weapons increases a climate of fear and insecurity and multiplies cases of lynchings. Victims are often the poorest, in particular elderly and beggars.

For this reason the Community of Sant'Egidio, as has already happened in other African countries (for example in Ivory Coast) has started a campaign against this climate of widespread violence and against the idea of a conflict that seems inescapable.

On 19 August, in a room of the college Alfajiri, the Community held a conference on the theme of peace, which we wanted to reaffirm the commitment to "conduct awareness at all levels of society against the spirit of opposition, to stop with the sheer force of the word all those that appeal to violence, to always condemn all forms of violence individual or collective that is produced in society, and to work for reconciliation, promoting coexistence, dialogue between different peoples and ethnic groups, and respect for all religions. "

An appeal was proclaimed, read and signed with great enthusiasm by the young people present, thus becoming spokesmen of a request for peace that rises in these days from the Congolese society and needs to be heard and fostered.
