Andrea Riccardi, Italian minister of cooperation and integration and founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, made reference to the declarations proclaiming equality of men and peoples in his remarks today in Sarajevo to the opening ceremony of the interfaith peace conference “Living Together is the Future” organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio in the spirit of Assisi. “Yet - he said - men and peoples, even though proclaimed to be equal, feel diverse”. Not just the history of Bosnia Herzegovina, but the history of mankind, show “the difficulty of living together”. That difficulty was also stressed by the president of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, who added however: “The death of thousands of inhabitants of Sarajevo will not be in vain. We have the responsibility to honor the dead with a more harmonious future”. A future that, according to Van Rompuy, is European: “The mission and the idea European is to eradicate war forever. The future is the European Union”. This concept is shared by Riccardi: “We are already experiencing a future of peace while building a Europe derived from a believing spirit and here represented by men of value and spirit, like President van Rompuy and President Monti”.
