The President of the Community of Sant'Egidio on the sad news from Texas, but the commitment to life does not end

printable version
“The execution by lethal injection of Kimberly McCarthy in the Prison of Huntsville, confirms the sad record of Texas with 500 capital executions”. It asserts the President of the Community of Sant'Egidio, prof. Marco Impagliazzo, adding that the news must "produce an increase in the efforts to move further steps towards a moratorium on executions in the world". "Signs of hope - Impagliazzo notes - arrived from Maryland, from other States of USA and from many African countries who have decided to erase the death penalty. Paula Cooper has been discharged just a few days ago, after 28 years in Rockville Indiana prison. Paula is a woman completely different from the one that committed the horrible crime at 15 years of age and she is now ready to give her contribution for the realization of a more equitable and less violent society. This is the sign that prison can redeem, while executions end any hope. This is the message that the representatives of 90 countries, belonging to the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, agreed during the recent Meeting in Madrid, urging renewed efforts to revive the process abolitionist worldwide ".
