“Without oxygen we can live only three minutes. Without water three days, and without food three weeks – and foods costs more then water” said Chief Rabbi of Cologne, Jaron Engelmayer at the panel dedicated to the relationship between generosity and market economy at the international meeting “The Courage to Hope” organized in Rome by the Community of Sant’Egidio.
“The more we need something, the less it costs – said Engelmayer – while to survive one can renounce luxury, which instead costs more”.
“For Judaism – he concluded – the words and the teaching of the Torah are free but this doesn’t mean that they are less valuable: they are like oxygen” |
