The Community of Sant'Egidio expresses its condolences on the death of Tadeusz Mazowiecki, former prime minister of the Republic of Poland, a protagonist of the peaceful transition from the communist regime to the Solidarnosc government. A man of faith and vision, he was a friend and collaborator of John Paul II at a crucial stage in the history of his country and of Europe.
On 1st September 1989, when he had only been for a few days at the helm of the first non-communist government in Poland, received the pilgrimage of the European religious leaders convened in Warsaw on the initiative of the Community of Sant'Egidio on the occasion of the 50 years since the beginning of the Second War World.
Tadeusz Mazowiecki has left an important mark on European history and will be remembered for his dedication to peace, dialogue, social justice and the spread of democracy. |
