La Comunità di Sant’Egidio intende segnalare i caso di Preston Hughes, che ha bisogno di fondi affinché si possa riaprire il processo a suo carico, dopo una condanna a morte per un omicidio di cui si è sempre proclamato innocente, subita nel corso di un procedimento caratterizzato da una assai dubbia regolarità.

La storia
Preston
Hughes ha 35 anni e si trova nel braccio della morte di
Livingston (Texas) dal 17 maggio 1989 in seguito ad una condanna
per l’omicidio di una ragazza di 15 anni e del cuginetto di 3 la
sera del 26 settembre 1988, a cui si è sempre dichiarato
estraneo.
A suo dire infatti Preston, nell’ora del delitto, si trovava da tutt’altra parte rispetto al luogo dove accadde. Venne però incriminato per una serie di coincidenze, alcune fortuite altre meno. Preston fu giudicato colpevole perché la vittima, sua amica da anni, fece il suo nome prima di morire, forse per chiamare aiuto. Colpevole perché viveva nella zona del delitto. Colpevole perché fu costretto dalla polizia a firmare una dichiarazione di colpevolezza dopo essere stato brutalmente picchiato. Colpevole perché gli occhiali della ragazza uccisa furono trovati in casa sua, probabilmente fatti trovare lì appositamente dalla polizia stessa. Colpevole per aver avuto in casa un coltello da caccia sporco di sangue di coniglio, che fu ritenuto dal pubblico ministero l’arma del delitto, arma che invece sembra non sia mai stata trovata.
Il rischio più grave oggi è che i termini dell’appello che Preston intende presentare per chiedere di essere sottoposto a un nuovo processo possano scadere prima che egli sia in grado di raccogliere la somma necessaria per assoldare avvocati e investigatori esperti.
La data di esecuzione potrebbe essere fissata in tempi brevi.

The Community of Sant’Egidio would like to point out the case of Preston Hughes, who needs money so that the trial on his behalf could be opened one more time, after that he was sentenced to death for a murder which he has always been claiming innocent about, during a judgement carried out with a seriously doubtful fairness.

His story
Preston Hughes is 35 and is detained on the Texas death row of Livingston since May 17th 1989 due to a sentence for the murder of a 15 years old girl and of her little cousin who was only 3 in the night of September 26th 1988, even though he has always declared he was not involved with.
Indeed he always said he was far away from the area where the crime took place at the time it was supposed to happen. Nevertheless he was prosecuted for a series of coincidental occurrences, some of them quite casual, other ones less. Preston was judged guilty because the victim, who was a friend of his for years, whispered his name before dying, maybe looking for help. Guilty because he lived in the area where the crime occurred. Guilty because he was forced by the police to subscribe a statement of culpability after being brutally beaten. Guilty because the glasses of the murdered girl were found inside his house, probably put there intentionally by the police itself. Guilty, finally, for keeping a rabbit-blooded knife, which was said the material evidence by the prosecutor. Indeed, the real killing knife seems to have never been found.
Today the most serious risk is that is running out the time in which Preston is allowed to send in an appeal to face another trial and that he might fail to find in time the necessary money to engage competent lawyers and detectives.
The date of his
execution might be scheduled very soon.
