Èxode 2,1-15
Un home de la família de Leví es va casar amb una dona de la mateixa família. La dona va tenir un fill. Veient que l'infant era bonic, el va amagar durant tres mesos. Quan ja no el va poder amagar més temps, prengué una cistella de papir, la va untar amb betum i pega, va posar-hi l'infant i la deixà entre els joncs a la vora del Nil. La germana del nen vigilava de lluny estant per veure què li passaria.
La filla del faraó va baixar a banyar-se al Nil, mentre les seves serventes es passejaven per la vora del riu. Ella veié la cistella enmig dels joncs i manà que una de les serventes anés a agafar-la. La va obrir i veié un nen que plorava. Se'n va compadir i digué:
-És un infant hebreu.
Llavors la germana del nen digué a la filla del faraó:
-Vols que et vagi a buscar una dida hebrea perquè te'l criï?
Ella li respongué:
-Vés-hi.
Ella anà a cridar la mare de l'infant. La filla del faraó li va dir:
-Pren aquest infant i cria-me'l. Jo t'ho pagaré.
La dona se'l va endur i el va criar.
Quan el nen va ser gran, la mare el va dur a la filla del faraó, que l'adoptà com a fill i li posà el nom de Moisès, perquè va dir: "L'he tret de l'aigua."
Moisès es va fer gran. Un dia va sortir a veure els seus germans hebreus i s'adonà dels treballs forçats que els imposaven. Tot passant va trobar un egipci que pegava a un dels seus germans. Va mirar a banda i banda i, veient que no hi havia ningú, va matar l'egipci i l'enterrà a la sorra.
L'endemà va tornar a sortir, trobà dos hebreus que es barallaven i va dir al qui no tenia raó:
-Per què pegues a un company?
Ell li replicà:
-¿Qui t'ha nomenat cap o jutge nostre? ¿Que potser em vols matar tal com vas matar l'egipci?
Llavors Moisès agafà por, perquè pensava: "Així, doncs, el fet és conegut." També el faraó ho va saber i cercava de matar Moisès. Però ell va fugir lluny del faraó i es refugià al país de Madian.
Arribat allí, es va asseure al costat d'un pou.

Aquí tens, Senyor, els teus servents:
que es compleixi en nosaltres la teva Paraula.

La narració del naixement de Moisès és sorprenent. Moisès pertany a la tribu de Leví, que havia estat maleïda per la seva violència (Gn 49,5-7). El seu nom és egipci i ell mateix està totalment integrat en la cultura egípcia. De fet, ha estat criat a casa del faraó. Són elements contradictoris que, tanmateix, no són cap obstacle perquè Déu l'elegeixi precisament a ell per alliberar el poble d'Israel. A través de la història de Moisès, el designi de Déu revela el valor de créixer junts, amb els altres, en un món que tantes vegades és lluny de la nostra mentalitat i la nostra cultura. Moisès es presenta com el "tret de l'aigua". Déu el salva per indicar per endavant la missió que confiarà a aquell nen en relació al seu poble, és a dir, alliberar-lo de l'esclavitud a través de les aigües del mar. La d'Israel semblava una història marcada per l'esclavitud, sense cap sortida. Però Déu no abandona els homes, no abandona els pobres, els esclaus, els condemnats d'aquest món. Ell continua suscitant molts Moisès perquè puguin traçar un camí de llibertat per a molts, vencent la resignació de la impossibilitat de la salvació. Moisés, amb la seva història, ens recorda que "tot és possible a qui té fe".
Prayer is the heart of the life of the Community of Sant'Egidio and is its absolute priority. At the end of the day, every the Community of Sant'Egidio, large or small, gathers around the Lord to listen to his Word. The Word of God and the prayer are, in fact, the very basis of the whole life of the Community. The disciples cannot do other than remain at the feet of Jesus, as did Mary of Bethany, to receive his love and learn his ways (Phil. 2:5).
So every evening, when the Community returns to the feet of the Lord, it repeats the words of the anonymous disciple: " Lord, teach us how to pray". Jesus, Master of prayer, continues to answer: "When you pray, say: Abba, Father". It is not a simple exhortation, it is much more. With these words Jesus lets the disciples participate in his own relationship with the Father. Therefore in prayer, the fact of being children of the Father who is in heaven, comes before the words we may say. So praying is above all a way of being! That is to say we are children who turn with faith to the Father, certain that they will be heard.
Jesus teaches us to call God "Our Father". And not simply "Father" or "My Father". Disciples, even when they pray on their own, are never isolated nor they are orphans; they are always members of the Lord's family.
In praying together, beside the mystery of being children of God, there is also the mystery of brotherhood, as the Father of the Church said: "You cannot have God as father without having the church as mother". When praying together, the Holy Spirit assembles the disciples in the upper room together with Mary, the Lord's mother, so that they may direct their gaze towards the Lord's face and learn from Him the secret of his Heart.
The Communities of Sant'Egidio all over the world gather in the various places of prayer and lay before the Lord the hopes and the sufferings of the tired, exhausted crowds of which the Gospel speaks ( Mat. 9: 3-7 ), In these ancient crowds we can see the huge masses of the modern cities, the millions of refugees who continue to flee their countries, the poor, relegated to the very fringe of life and all those who are waiting for someone to take care of them. Praying together includes the cry, the invocation, the aspiration, the desire for peace, the healing and salvation of the men and women of this world. Prayer is never in vain; it rises ceaselessly to the Lord so that anguish is turned into hope, tears into joy, despair into happiness, and solitude into communion. May the Kingdom of God come soon among people!
