Mozambique and the fight against cholera, in the wake of cyclone Idai

Dear user,

we like to keep you updated on what's going on in Mozambique and Malawi, in the wake of cyclone Idai. We do so, to let you know about the efforts of Sant’Egidio and to heart-fully thank all those supporting us.

The first consequence, in the wake of the cyclone Isai, is water contamination with severe risk of epidemics. The first cases of cholera have already started in Mozambique. The WHO foresees the infection could reach between 5 and 10,000 people. That is why Sant’Egidio has immediately started a vaccination campaign against cholera in both DREAM centre (Beira and Manga Chingussura). We treated more than 8,000 people already, and we make drinking water always available, particularly for children.

Volunteers are working around the clock to vaccinate as many people as possible, while the activists of the Dream Program and many other Mozambican volunteers have spread to different areas where people have taken refuge and are urging everyone to get vaccinated.

We managed to reach the area of Buzi, which was only possible by helicopter. Floods are so extensive there that connection with hinterland are completely abrupt. In the next days, we will go back by boats, providing more aid for all the poor people who remained isolated and deprived of everything.

There are so many other things we could you update with. However, we like to keep the focus on the tragic situation of Mozambique and Malawi.

Please this beloved country od ours in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.
