3rd of October, Italian National Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Immigration. Six years after the shipwreck of Lampedusa, we shouldn't forget

The faces of those who have lost their lives at Lampedusa and those of the work 'Angels unawares' by Timothy Schmalz

It has been six years since that terrible 3rd of October 2013, when 368 persons, most of them Eritrean women and children, lost their lives in a shipwreck near the coast of Lampedusa. A tragedy that unfortunately has repeated itself multiple times in recent years.

Since 1990 until now, more than 37 thousand persons have died at sea while trying to reach Europe. And notwithstanding the significant decline in the number of migrants who arrive across the Mediterranean, the percentage of victims at sea has increased in 2018 as a result of journeys becoming more and more dangerous.

From 2014, this day has become the National Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Immigration.
