A STEP TOWARDS THE PACIFICATION OF CASAMANCE

Press release

From October 24 to 26, a delegation of the Government of Senegal, which was sent by His Excellency President Macky Sall, and a delegation of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), which was sent by its leader Mr. Salif Sadio, met in Rome. The meeting took place in order to discuss the framework of the negotiations for the return of peace in Casamance. Specifically, the bargainings have been carried out under the mediation of the Community of Sant'Egidio.

On this occasion, the two deputations examined an important point of the negotiation process that was adopted in Rome, on November 3, 2013. This aspect is titled "Economic issues".

In this context, the two representatives considered that it is important to watch over the protection of Casamance's natural wealth by vigorously fighting against the plundering of forest resources, and by safeguarding Casamance's fishing and mining potential.

The two delegations also confirmed the need of consolidating the dynamics of the search for peace, which is based on the agreement on "Measures of Mutual Trust".

At the end of the meeting, the two deputations conveyed their gratitude to the Community of Sant'Egidio. Specifically, they expressed their thankfulness for the Community’s ongoing commitment to contribute to the success of the negotiations, especially when it comes to the establishment of a constructive spirit and the implementation of the points that were mentioned earlier.
