Mozambique, President Nyusi: "Sant'Egidio is the House of Peace

Work for peace, fight against AIDS, Pope Francis' visit and the reconstraction of Beira

The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, visited today the Community of Sant'Egidio, where he met with the founder Andrea Riccardi, the president Marco Impagliazzo and other Community leaders. "This is the house of peace and of Mozambique," said Nyusi, recalling how the negotiations that led to the signing of peace on 4th October 1992, took place in Sant’Egidio since 1990. Addressing the journalists, Nyusi invited them to "make a report on all that Sant Egidio represents for Mozambique”. In addition to facilitation in the negotiations for national reconciliation, the President recalled the aid for the treatment of AIDS, with the DREAM Program, and the numerous solidarity projects in favor of the population.

“The people of Mozambican are waiting with anxiety and joy Pope Francis, pilgrim of peace and of the Gospel" said Nyusi, rejoicing that the DREAM center in Zimpeto - on the outskirts of Maputo, a center of excellence in the treatment of AIDS - will be visited by the Holy Father. Finally, the President expressed his gratitude to Sant'Egidio for its concrete closeness and solidarity in the aftermath of the devastating Cyclone Idai, which particularly affected the Beira region. "I particularly thank the many young Mozambicans, volunteers of Sant’Egidio, who have tirelessly worked to bring relief to the victims of the cyclone. Also with the help of Sant’Egidio - he concluded - we will rebuild Beira ”.
