EARTHQUAKE IN ALBANIA: SANT’EGIDIO’S CLOSENESS AND SOLIDARITY TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING AT EUROPE

The Community of Sant'Egidio expresses all its closeness to the Albanian people who are struck by tonight's earthquake. The Community also sent its condolences to the families of the victims, whose number is still unknown. During this moment of emergency, Sant'Egidio renews its solidarity with a country where the organization has been present for a while. Specifically, the Community’s aid has ranged from the support that was given for the transition to democracy in the late 1980s to the work for peace through inter religious dialogue, up to the social emergencies in which some projects have been launched.
The hope is that the relief machinery will be able to save as many lives as possible and bring comfort to those who have been injured or lost their homes. Albania, which is increasingly looking to Europe for its economic and social development, needs great international solidarity
