Memory of Martin Luther King, killed on April, 4th 1968 in Memphis. With him we remember all those who hunger and thirst for justice.

Reading of the Word of God

Praise to you, o Lord, King of eternal glory

The spirit of the Lord is upon you
The child you will bear shall be holy.

Praise to you, o Lord, King of eternal glory

Luke 22, 63-65

Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.
They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'
And they heaped many other insults on him.

Praise to you, o Lord, King of eternal glory

Look down, O Lord, on your servants:
Be it done to us according to your word..

Praise to you, o Lord, King of eternal glory

Jesus is being tortured, mocked, and beaten. He is blindfolded and does not even know who is hitting him. How many men and how many women still today are in places of torture, on death rows! How many are blindfolded and do not know whose hands are torturing them! How many suffer violence against their own bodies and are blinded and do not know where to go or what to do! Even if they were to scream, no one would hear them; no one could help. Prophesy! Who is it that struck you? the guards yell at Jesus. Like so many others, Jesus has fallen into the deep pit of torture. There is a part of this world that is hidden, and it is full of great suffering, great pain, terrible torture, and cruel abandonment. It is right to be moved and to pray that the hour of darkness might pass soon.
