The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the Hall of Peace between the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Supreme Commission for National Reconciliation of Iraq

In recent days, the Supreme Commission for National Reconciliation of Iraq gathered in Rome thanks to the invitation of the Community of Sant'Egidio. The Commission is composed of representatives that come from the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament, and the President of the Constitutional Court. Moreover, the Commission asked the Community of Sant'Egidio to contribute by employing its experience in the work of dialogue and reconciliation that the Commission is responsible for carrying out.
Today, Tuesday, June 21, at 11:30 a.m., a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the Commission and the Community of Sant'Egidio in the Peace Room at Sant'Egidio. This document will include the basic strategies for actions that are aimed at rebuilding peace and at fostering coexistence among the various ethnic, social and confessional components of the Iraqi population. Specifically, this Memorandum is founded on the rejection of discrimination. Hence, this document’s goal is to preserve Iraq's cultural and religious diversity by spreading them through dialogue and a culture of peace. The joint initiatives will seek to reach out to the victims of the present conflict and protect the minorities that are currently in Iraq.
The Community of Sant'Egidio expresses its satisfaction for having contributed to the achievement of the Memorandum of Understanding, which is a useful tool for peace. In this way, the institutions of the Iraqi State can address to the entire population a message of peace and respect for the different components of society.
