THE SPIRIT OF ASSISI CONTINUES TO WHISPER IN AFRICA: THE “THIRST FOR PEACE” MEETING IN TOGO

The interreligious meeting "Thirst for Peace" was held in Lomé, Togo. As in Assisi last September, the Community of Sant'Egidio of Togo, in collaboration with the Franciscan Province of West Africa, brought together people of different religions for a day of dialogue and prayer for peace in the Adidogome neighborhood.

Representatives from Islam, Buddhists, Hare Krishna, the National Federation of Vodù Cults, Catholics, Methodists, and Presbyterian Protestants spoke at the panel discussion. The main themes were peace and the need to build bridges of solidarity and coexistence among religions by going against all forms of violence. The meeting also highlighted the responsibility of men and women of religion to be credible educators on issues of peace and coexistence within their communities.

The day ended with solemn moments of prayer by each religious denomination, followed by the reading and signing of the 2016 Assisi Appeal for Peace.
