During Holy Week, the Community of Sant'Egidio remembers the Christians who were killed or have suffered persecution, discrimination and deprivation of religious freedom. We do this remembering the names and stories of these witnesses of the Gospel, while repeating the words of Pope Francis: ‘Today, in the 21st century, our Church is a Church of martyrs’. In many countries around the world, the disarmed and non-violent witness of Christians is a scandal against violence, corruption and terror. There are places where people have been killed for attending mass, where churches and Christian schools have been burnt down, where people have been threatened, intimidated or killed for educating young people and taking them away from criminal gangs.
