The emergency in Malawi after the Cyclone Idai: elderly and children the most affected

The districts of Balaka, Mulanje, Chikwawa and the southern parts of the country closest to Mozambique were the areas most affected by the Cyclone Idai. The disaster has caused the loss of lives and many displaced people who have lost everything.

Months later, many families still haven't found accommodation and live in collection camps created spontaneously without receiving any outside help. Moreover, even those who could return to their villages do not have any food to eat as the cyclone destroyed the crops which constituted their patrimony.

Young people has left their villages, there are only elderly and children who survive with a great deal of suffering. The Communities of Sant'Egidio in the country, in recent weeks have organized a second  aid distribution: food, medicine and materials to rebuild the houses, especially of the elderly. The aid reached about 25,000 people.
