REFUGEES AND HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS: 40 MORE ARRIVALS AT FIUMICINO ON MONDAY MORNING

Press release
While Europe struggles and is divided when it comes to immigrants, civil society shows that an alternative is possible

Another 40 refugees from Lebanon will arrive on Monday, Jan. 30, through the establishment of humanitarian corridors, which are promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy, and the Waldensian Table. Since the start of the ecumenical project, which was launched on Dec. 15 (2015) after an agreement that was signed with the ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior, 540 people have come to Italy and have been aided. The plan calls for 1,000 arrivals by 2017. It is a model that works because it combines humanity and security.

While Europe struggles to find solutions that combine humanity and security by dividing over the fate of thousands of men and women who are victims of human traffickers, humanitarian corridors prove over time to be a model that works. This is the result of a valuable synergy between civil society and institutions. Hence, they foster integration by offering those fleeing wars - and in particular to people in vulnerable conditions (families with children, single women, the elderly, the sick, and people with disabilities) - to arrive, safely and legally, on our continent. Some refugees, who have arrived in recent months, will be present at Fiumicino to welcome the new arrivals.

To attend the briefing, journalists and operators should arrive at Fiumicino Terminal 2 no later than 10 a.m.
