BRICK BY BRICK… YOUTH FOR PEACE FROM CONGO AND BURUNDI ARE BUILDING HOMES FOR THE POOREST ELDERLY

The solidarity initiatives of this summer are continuing: many members of the Youth for Peace from Congo and Burundi have gathered in Bujumbura to strengthen the bond of friendship and closeness with many elderly people.

In Burundi, the elderly still represent only 2.3% of the population. Life expectancy has increased significantly in recent years thanks also to peace; for instance, it was only 44 years in 2000, and now it has boosted to almost 60 years. Hence, it is expected that the elderly will reach 12% of the population in 2050. The Community of Sant'Egidio visits the elderly in the countryside and, in Bujumbura, specifically in the neighborhoods of the city and in an institute. However, many of them are experiencing extreme poverty.

As we can see in the pictures, brick by brick, the Youth have begun to build houses for the elderly in need.

Additionally, a big party was organized in Kinama (which is a suburb of Bujumbura) with the participation of children of the Schools of Peace, the Youth, and the elderly.
