The President of the Community of Sant Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, intervened this morning in New York at the UN Security Council. The invitation was the recognition of an experience, accumulated over the years of mediation in the international field,  with work carried out in different areas of the world, starting from the peace obtained for Mozambique in October 1992.

Impagliazzo presented on the difficult situation in the Central African Republic and on the possibility of reaching the end of the crisis and the tensions that persist in some areas of the country. After explaining how the Community has favored and accompanied the process that led to democratic elections in the country, the president of Sant'Egidio announced that in the coming days all relevant actors will meet in Rome, thanks to contacts long held with the various factions in the field. The representatives of the fourteen armed groups existing together with the emissaries of President Touadéra will talk about disarmament, reintegration of former combatants and political dialogue, in the presence of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Central African Republic Mr. Onanga-Anyanga.

The objective is to create a "climate of trust" among Central Africans, according to the capacities of Sant’Egidio who offers himself as a "neutral ground of dialogue and negotiation".

The UN, through Undersecretary for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, signed a collaboration agreement with Sant’Egidio on peace and conflict prevention last Friday that officially recognizes the role played by the Community in the world.
