The 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York concludes today. A delegation of the Community of Sant'Egidio took part in the work by intervening in various side events, including one dedicated to the worldwide campaign for the moratorium on executions and one high-level meeting on the Central African Republic in the presence of the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Central African Republic and numerous ministers from all over the world. On this last occasion, the Community of Sant'Egidio reaffirmed its commitment to the resolution of the Central African crisis and to the voluntary disarmament of armed groups.
Participation in the General Assembly of the United Nations was also the occasion for bilateral meetings with several European and African presidents and delegations.
The Community, after the signing of the peace agreement at Sant'Egidio between 14 armed groups and the government of the Central African Republic that took place in June 2017, remains committed, together with the international community, to the disarmament of the rebels. Furthermore, Sant'Egidio is present in the country with the DREAM program for the treatment of AIDS and with a permanent mission for the general project of disarmament.
