REFUGEES, HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS MAKE UP A THOUSAND

Friday morning, more than 120 Syrians from Lebanon arrived at Fiumicino. This number leads to a total of 1,000 people who have been welcomed in Italy thanks to the project that is promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Italian Protestant Churches. It is a tested and replicable model, which represents a concrete alternative to travel on barges in the Mediterranean

The appointment for the welcome and a press conference
is at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27

The arrival of journalists should happen no later than 10:10 a.m. at Fiumicino Terminal 3 departures
(door 3, next to the information office); they will be escorted to the conference venue.

Speakers will include Marco Impagliazzo, president of the Community of Sant'Egidio; Paolo Naso, for the Italian Protestant Churches; Mario Giro, deputy foreign minister; and representatives of the Interior Ministry.

More than 120 Syrian refugees from Lebanon will arrive at Fiumicino airport on Friday, Oct. 27, thanks to the humanitarian corridors that are promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy, and Tavola Valdese. The new group, which is made up of families with many minors, will lead the milestone of 1,000 people, who have arrived safely and legally in Italy since February 2016. This has been occurring thanks to an agreement with the Foreign and Interior Ministries.

While Europe still struggles to find a unity of views and responsibility when it comes to immigration, an alliance of different civil society actors manages to achieve and self-finance a concrete alternative to the Mediterranean journeys of despair and human traffickers. Recalling that humanitarian corridors have even started in France, it is reported that Friday's reception in Fiumicino will also be an opportunity to illustrate new proposals on immigration: concrete solutions instead of clashes, polemics, and instrumentalization.

To attend the event, journalists and operators should arrive at Fiumicino Terminal 3 departures (door 3, next to the information office) no later than 10 a.m. They will be accompanied to the conference venue. It is necessary to get accredited by sending an email to this address: [email protected] indicating the media outlet and professional card or document number. It is possible to use the parking lot (a special exit ticket will be given at the time of accreditation).
