PRESS RELEASE

Let the world listen to the words of Pope Francis on the death penalty. May a universal moratorium be soon reached

Sant'Egidio gratefully welcomes the exhortation of the pope to abandon the practice of the death penalty

The Pope's words must be listened to: the death penalty is an affront to the sanctity of life and - as pointed out by Pope Francis in the letter sent today to the President of the International Commission against the Death Penalty - in addition to being cruel, inhuman and degrading, it proves to be a great failure because it does not do justice to the victims, but only encourages revenge.

The Community of Sant'Egidio, which for years has conducted an international campaign against the death penalty with the movement of Cities for Life (which has been signed so far by about 2,000 municipalities in 98 countries from all continents), expresses its gratitude and its closeness to Pope Francis for the words with which he condemns executions in a strong and clear way.

The Pope encourages everyone to make our world, already full of violence and conflict, more humane and merciful by calling for a strong commitment to cancel sentences devoid of pity and long waits on death row that are real torture.

Sant'Egidio deems of great importance the appeal, contained in the same letter, to improve prison conditions, respecting the human dignity of persons deprived of their liberty.

Long-distance adoptions: the centre for children and war refugees in eastern Ukraine is reopened

The centre, rebuilt with the contribution of the programme of Sant'Egidio, had been destroyed during the fighting.

Last October we told about the start of the reconstruction work of the rehabilitation centre for children "The Sail of Hope" of Slovyansk, a city not far from Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, the scene of heavy fighting that devastated the entire region. (Go to the news).

After four months of work, accomplished thanks to the long-distance adoptions programme of the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Centre was finally able to reopen the doors: it currently houses 25 children and 40 refugee families from the areas of the fighting that, in the "Sail of Hope", receive food, medical care and all the attention they need.

However, the situation in Slovyansk is still very tense. There are about 30,000 refugees, including many children, that in recent months have found shelter in tents or in the destroyed buildings of the city. They need everything: clothes, food, medicine. "The Sail of Hope" has become also a centre for the collection of funds and organises daily distributions of basic necessities.

Through frequent home visits and deliveries of aid, the new Centre aims to be a support to the many elders of the city, living alone in their homes, often without anything. Thus, "The sail of hope" represents an oasis of peace for the families and the children that it houses, but also for many other people: in a city destroyed and made grey by war, the bright colours with which the centre was repainted want to be a sign of hope and serenity.

The dream of Mons. Romero for El Salvador at the heart of the meeting of the youth with Mons. Vincenzo Paglia

salvador giovani per la pace sant'egidioAbout 1,200 young people gathered in the gymnasium of the Salvadoran High School to listen to the words of Mgr Vincenzo Paglia, postulator of the cause of beatification of Mons. Romero, whose date, 23 May, was solemnly proclaimed these days.

The meeting, organised by the Community of Sant'Egidio of El Salvador, was intended to bring the younger generations closer to the figure of Mons. Romero, this great shepherd whose story is intertwined with that of Salvador, so that they understood the topicality of his dream for the country and his message. The Archbishop of El Salvador, José Luis Escobar Alas, and the apostolic nuncio, Mons. Leon Kalenga Badikebele, were present along with Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia.

mons. Vincenzo Paglia a El SalvadorA meeting full of joy and contagious enthusiasm: Mgr. Paglia spoke of the testimony of peace and love for the Gospel of the martyr bishop, of his love for the poor, of his dream for a fairer Salvador, "Romero told us that we must not resign ourselves to a sad and banal life, but dream big, dream of a better society for everyone, where everyone is happy, where one can be together with others".

The Archbishop of El Salvador recalled William Quijano, the young man of Sant'Egidio killed for his commitment to the School of Peace in one of the most violent neighbourhoods in the outskirts of the capital, and exhorted them to gather the testimony.

All these words were welcomed with great enthusiasm and with hope by the youth gathered, who expressed their desire to dream of a better country, as Monsignor Romero wanted it to be.

Deep sorrow for the blast at the Churchs in Lahore. Among the victims, Abish, ten years old, a child of School of Peace

Abish was ten year old and he attended School of Peace in the small but beautiful house of Community of Sant'Egidio in Lahore, just near to Yohannabad.

Christmas lunch, for him was a moment of joy and feast.

It is right in this joyful moment that we see him in this picture, taken on Deember 25th, 2014. He is the third one from right side.

Abish has been wounded in teh blast at the catholic church of Yohannabad on Sunday 15th march and died after a while in hospital. He is the victim of a blind and meaningless hatred who hit once again the small and poor Christian minority of Pakistan, making innocent victims.
