“Dr. Palombi from the Community of Sant’Egidio: “No to euthanasia. Lay people and believers together to guarantee 4 rights: the right not to suffer, the right of not being abandoned, the right to stay home and the right to a real dignity. These could be the four rights on a common field of lay people and believers for the defence of life.” These are the words of Dr Leonardo Palombi of the Community of Sant’Egidio, at the Panel “The Value of Life and Vulnerability” of the Interreligious Meeting “The Courage to Hope””.
Dr. Palombi continued: “a certain culture of waste derives from the idea that the elderly – and more generally spoken of all those living in difficult, chronic invalidating conditions – are an unproductive waste, or even a burden on the shoulders of others. People don’t realise that this is our face, this is our destiny”. Palombi then concluded: “One cannot abolish our weakness or disease with a euthanasia more or less explicit, as it already happens in Europe and also in Italy. Or with what Pope Frances calls the hidden euthanasia”. |
