On October 17th in Monrovia, a representative of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Mario Giro, attended the installation of the new President of Liberia, Gyude Bryant, who has been appointed after the recent peace process. This event marks an important step in the reconciliation of the country after the long civil war which severely tried it. .
The presence of the representative of the Community in Monrovia is due to its decisive role in the peace negotiations.
Sant'Egidio took part in the Accra talks as a facilitator and organized several meetings for peace, in particular those with the representatives of the LURD (Liberian United for Reconciliation and Democracy), the most important armed opposition party, led by Damate Conneh.
The LURD's decision to accept the Accra peace agreement without preconditions arose from the talks in Rome between January and August 2003. |
