In Goma, in the refugee field "Mugunga 1", was inaugurated on July 29 the School of Peace of the Community of Sant'Egidio.
The school was entitled to Floribert Bwana Chui, the young member of the Community of Goma killed two years ago for having resisted to a corruption attempt.
In September, at the beginning of the new school year, it will welcome three hundred children aging six to twelve.
In the presence of the local authorities, among whom the regional Minister of justice, responsible for the human rights and the restoration of the refugee, the representatives of the Community of Sant'Egidio of Rome and of Goma, the children of the field and of their teachers, intervened in a solemn ceremony to express the joy and the meaning of this event.
After the cutting of the tape, the blessing of the classes by the episcopal vicar and the party, the children were finally able to sit on the benches of six new classes. A lot of them were compelled to interrupt the school just three years ago, when they had to flee from the villages of the North Kivu involved in the clashes between military groups and in the plunder.
The School of the Peace will offer to them all the possibility to take again the regular lessons, having been recognized officially by the regional Ministry of education, who, after having assessed its quality and setting, recommended it as an example and model to all the associations that will want to establish new ones.
The ten teachers are refugee in the field themselves, and with the school will regain – together with work and the lost wage – dignity and reason for hope in the future.
The school of the Community of Sant'Egidio is actually the first one fully equipped to be set up in the fields of Goma, that welcome at least 150,000 persons. The teachers were formed in the spirit of the School of Peace, to disarm the feelings of resentment and violence accumulated by the refugee along these years of suffering and contact with war.
The School is the fruit of a "global" solidarity: the Community of Sant'Egidio of all of the world and many friends (among whom many visitors of the website) have in fact heard the drama of this region that, with its two million refugee, represents perhaps the main humanitarian emergency present, and have dedicated their contribution, making possible the construction of the school.
The building is especially fresh and colored: the big doves with the rainbow are visible also by those who arrive in Goma by plane.
A big spontaneous applause greeted the dedication of the School to Floribert, whose brave choice for the Gospel, paid with life, does not end to give fruits of peace and reconciliation for his land.
